There are many different kinds of mothers...

My father's mother, my Grandma Kay, was a fun and devoted mom.  She would take her teeth out to make us laugh and let us wear her fancy clothes to play dress up without ever worrying we'd ruin something.  She had a heart of gold.

My Grandmama, mom's mother, was a sarcastic, clever, and funny mom.  She was fiercely loyal and brutally honest.  She let us know if she was disappointed or proud, usually the latter, never pretending to be anything but herself.  She was so strong.

My mother, I am lucky to say, is the kind of mom they write about in books.  She has always put family first.  Our joys are her joys and our struggles are her struggles.  She is unbelievably supportive and thoughtful but gives us room to make mistakes and grow.  She is simply the best.

Three moms.  Three amazing women.  Three uniquely wonderful women.

Mother's Day is a time for us to recognize the uniqueness in each individual woman and celebrate what makes her special to us.  It is not a time to do what's convenient and fall back on a box of chocolate or bouquet of carnations.
